The ones you can buy at Radio Shack are as they are, you can't modify or change anything on them but the cars/trucks from the hobby store can be modified and you can do so much with them, various differant types of tires/wheels you can change on the cars and on and on. Radio shack uses lesser quality and simplistic technology to get the job done. I've baught lots of radio shack boats and cars and converted them with good electronics. After taking them apart I've found that almost all tend to use one large circut board for functions to cut down on cost. In doing this a hobby person is unable to use other transmitters, different motors and batteries, and swapping things like servo's.
Also while the plastic used is bigger beefier and bulky for looks and taking a beating. It produces a ton of excess weight that is not needed bogging the rc down which prevents it from going faster etc.
In the end your paying more for individual name brand electronics from the hobby shop which for many hobbiest they couldn't live without. The kits for cars and trucks cost more because they have all option parts and nearly everything on the vehicle can be replaced should need be.
For anyone looking to persue the "hobby" I would pay the 150 at a hobby shop, for those just looking for a "toy" I'd go to radio shack.
P.S. only most radio shack boats can be modified with your own electronics (ecept for X-Mods) References : 8 years pro RC
What you all need is the quality…..and you can get from the place where they make that stuffs or we can say the owners…..you can able to modifies it and also can take replace it with some thing more better….as far as RC toys are concerns than I suggest that it should be taken or buy from the Hobby place itself….because if we need some kind of modifications than it will be done by them only and yes they have all the spare parts with them also to serve you with something more better……though i will cost you little more than Radio shacks but it will going to serve you with better..
